Dette er første gang FN har kåret et år med ett enkelt materiale, som fremhever glassets uunnværlige og viktige rolle på mange felt som teknologi, økonomi, miljø, kultur og samfunn, samt dets rolle i møte med utfordringer og bygge et bærekraftig samfunn.
